In August 2014, I set off from Vancouver, BC on my first multi-day bikepacking trip. I had never done anything like it. I wanted to quit after day 3. I’m glad I didn’t. I finished in San Francisco later that month after 1,247 miles along the Pacific Coast.

Pacific Coast Route | 2014

It’s time for another.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Oklahoma in July after 14 months in their accelerated program. The next step is to take the NCLEX and become a REGISTERED Nurse. I will not be able to test until early September at the earliest due to timing with graduation, receiving our Ticket To Test, and scheduling to take the actual exam.

Pinning ceremony.

So in the meantime, I will be leaving Bend, OR on August 15th and will need to be in Denver, CO by September 19.

Rough estimate of the route I’ll be taking.

With this trip, I’ve had to plan with a little more attention to detail. Looking back to 2014, I have no idea how I did that ride. Seriously. I feel as if I was unprepared about everything. I have the same feeling this time, but at least I have a little more knowledge about bikepacking. Still nervous. In addition to the actual ride, I feel as if I’m leaving more at home this time. More responsibility. More worry. More love.

Megan and I are flying to Portland on Saturday, August 10 where we will be staying at the McMenamin’s Kennedy School, an old elementary school that’s been turned into a hotel. We’ve stopped here each time we’ve been to Portland to hang out and have a drink, but this time we’re actually staying in it! Their auditorium was turned into a theatre, they have a brewery onsite and the playground is now a courtyard. It’s really terrific. We will then be driving to Bend, Oregon for a Lakestreet Dive and Avett Brothers concert while staying at Tumalo State Park. We love camping as we spent our honeymoon camping down the Oregon coast, but this time, we are checking out central oregon on the east side of the Cascades. Very exciting! Megan will drive back to PDX on Thursday, August 15 where I will take off from Bend on my first day….. nerves, anxiety, emotion….

Now for the details.

Detailed Route with mileage, camping, etc. Continuously updating.

When reviewing your list and looking at the setup, the only overlooked item I see is alcohol. I think it would be sensible to add a trailer hitch and pull an ice chest. Good luck sir. Looking forward to following the journey.

I learned last time that I don’t need an ice chest at all… half a beer after 7 hours of exercising is all you need to get you where you want to be.
